The first grapes were pressed in-house in 1985, after the grapes had been sold for many years. Step by step, the in-house pressing was expanded and people with the appropriate know-how were hired.
In 1995, Clos Malverne was the first winery to produce the classic Cape Blend, meaning at least 30% Pinotage, but no more than 70%. This Cape Blend, called Auret, an old Germanic name given to Seymour's mother, caused a sensation in 1998 when the wine received 5 stars from John Platter.
The microclimate and the soil make it possible in Devon Valley to produce very complex and finesse-rich wines. It is a flat valley cooler than the surrounding areas. This extends the maturing time a little, which in turn benefits the quality.
