Nico van der Merwe

Nicolas van der Merwe has been producing his own wines for around 25 years. With the first vintage in 1999 he realized a dream.

He comes from a family of wheat farmers and turned to viticulture during his time at the agricultural school in Elsenburg. After graduating, he went to Germany, where he attended the country's oldest viticulture school, the LVWO Weinsberg.

In South Africa Nico van der Merwe is a wine legend. His quality wines perfectly reflect the character and terroir of the Cape. The winemaker relies on a combination of traditional and modern methods during production. The van der Merwe family has owned a small country estate “Mooi Uitsig” since 2005. The winery offers breathtaking views from Cape Hangklip to the Tygerberg Hills.

After graduating in Germany, Nico van der Merwe returned to South Africa and became the first "flying winemaker" in South Africa: half the year he ran a winery in Stellenbosch (Saxenburg) and the other half a winery in Languedoc in France (Château Capion) . During their stay in France, the family not only discovered a new culture and way of life, it was also the birthplace of Nico van der Merwe's dream of creating his own wines. This dream became a reality with the first vintage of Mas Nicolas in 1999.

It produces great red wines that are excellent accompaniments to a hearty main course of meat and poultry. But they also go wonderfully with a cheese platter, which is served with an aperitif or as a dessert. The wines will make an impression!
